Weekly Joke – Engineering Rules
1. Any circuit design must contain at least one part which is obsolete, two parts which are unobtainable and three parts which are still under development.
2. Nothing ever gets built on schedule or within budget.
3. A failure will not appear till a unit has passed final inspection.
4. If you can’t fix it — document it.
5. The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the fabricator and impossible for the serviceman.
Society Stuff:
We are still looking for a couch for the CES office – if anyone has a truck, and sees a decent one at the side of the road… Bring it in!
End of term is coming up, we are looking for EOT Party directors – I’m looking at you Connor and you Cowboy Dave! Since we have a bit of a budget surplus, CES will be providing the food for these party(s)!
Have a great week!

Are you looking for excitement? A fancy title? Respect? Experience? Office keys? Your own business card? POWER?!?
Winter term is coming to an end, and elections will be soon upon us! Who of you will rise to the challenge after the current exec is long dead and gone!
Unfortunately, we do not run an autocratic society, and as such, if you are interested in running for a position you must be nominated by two people in a due democratic process. The nomination form is located here: http://conestogaengsoc.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/ces_nomination_form2012.pdf (Found under Documents)
POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
President is the leader of the pack and is the official voice of the society. This person will sit as a student liaison on many committees as well as be the official spokesperson for The Nut.
The VP External is in charge of liaising with the external organizations such as CFES, ESSCO and charity organizations external to EngSoc.
The VP Internal is in charge of all internal EngSoc events run by Engsoc during the term, they keep directors on track and work hard to make sure the many EngSoc events are as awesome as they can be.
The VP Operations ensures all financial matters are in line and they also run the novelties store.
Nomination forms are due to me, APRIL 2, 2012! If I do not have these in my hand by 5PM, you are out of luck. You can find me in the 3/4 year project room between 3-5PM. You can also hand in your forms EARLY, I’m always around somewhere.
Following nominations, you will have 2 weeks to campaign, and voting will occur just before exams.
Good luck! If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the current executive.

COVERALLS COVERALLS COVERALLS – A message from our VPI Connor Olsen
Do you use the machine shop? Do you feel that you’re always running out of pockets? Do you attend events in which you’d like to show how much better Conestoga is then any other engineering school? If yes to any of these, then you should purchase some coveralls, they’re great for parties, expanding your inventory and conferences. Normal eng. students pay ~$90 for their coveralls (i.e. UW) but we offer you coveralls for the fine price of $45.00. So, if you want em, fill out the form. I’m not going to remember any of your info in the halls so you have to fill out this form!
Want to rock the limited-edition Conestoga Engineering leather? These jackets are ONLY available to MSE students! Get them while they’re hot!
We will be having the custom tailor come in on March 7th, 10AM-1PM in the CES office for sizing! They cost approximately $350 + modifications. (it’s on the CES calendar!)

Rock Climbing @ Grand River Rocks- Weekly
A bunch of us rock climb at the new Kitchener gym called Grand River Rocks. Whenever we go we will update the CES calendar (located on the main page) with the time we will be there. If you want to come out and learn how to climb let us know, or just show up! If you have any questions you can contact either myself or Ian Hillier.
RUBE GOLDBERG
It’s almost that time of the year! National Engineering Month is coming up and we have been given the special task of constructing 2 Rube Goldberg machines. One will be made at Conestoga and the other will be the main attraction at the CN Tower! We are going to need people at the CN Tower the night of the event so whoever puts in the most work will be going. We are looking to bring ~5 people. If you’re interested in helping out with either, please email VPI_CES@conestogac.on.ca
BREWERY TOUR
It’s time for the first ever CES brewery tour. We will be going to Grand River Brewery in Cambridge for the nice low price of $10 / person. This includes the tour, tasting and a cup! More information to come.
Society Stuff

We have been given permission to “renovate” the CES room, if anyone has any old furniture (couches, a fridge, etc) they don’t need, let us know! Our hope is the office will soon become the perfect chill zone for all to enjoy!
Weekly Joke:
ENGINEERS & GUILLOTINES
Today they’re leading a priest, a drunkard and an engineer to the guillotine. They ask the priest if he wants to face up or down when he meets his fate. The priest says that he would like to face up so he will be looking toward heaven when he dies. They raise the blade of the guillotine, release it, it comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. The authorities take this as divine intervention and release the priest.
Next the drunkard comes to the guillotine. He also decides to die face up hoping that he will be as fortunate as the priest. They raise the blade of the guillotine, release it, it comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. So they release the drunkard as well.
The engineer is next. He too decides to die facing up. They slowly raise the blade of the guillotine, when suddenly the engineer says: “Hey, I see what your problem is…”

This weekend we had a successful qualifier at the Conestoga/Guelph Engineering Competition. The two teams moving forwards to the Ontario Engineering Competition THIS WEEKEND are as follows:
Senior Design Team:
Ian Hillier, Gary Seelen, John Wisenberg and myself
An architect, an artist and an engineer were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a mistress. The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship. The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found there. The engineer said, “I like both.” “Both?” Engineer: “Yeah. If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other woman, and you can go to the lab and get some work done.”
Looks great on your resume for potential co-op employers!

This year as a result of having the best machine last year, ESSCO has asked us to build the CN tower machine. It is expected that this machine be more visually appealing, interesting, and reliable (properly designed and not thrown together with garbage). The machine is to be ready for March 8th where it will be tested live (unlike any other machine). If you would like to help, please sign up through the following link http://conestogaengsoc.ca/2012/01/30/nem-rube-goldberg-machine/. More details will be given to those who sign up.
Bowling at Dickson Bowl – 61 Ainslie St. S Cambridge Last year the Society purchased two Groupon’s for bowling – They expire February 10th so that means we need to go bowling!
First 10 people to signup get in free for 2 hours of bowling with free pizza! Anyone else will have to pay for their own entrance, but it’s relatively cheap anyways.
We will be going Tuesday February 7th at 7PM. Hope to see you all there!
There will be a meeting this Thursday in A2230 at noon. All are welcome to attend!
There is also an Iron Ring petition sheet floating around in every year’s classroom. Please take a look at it and sign it if you agree!

MSE Students win 1st place in Senior Design at the Ontario Engineering Competition.
Over the weekend a team of four students consisting of Jamie Hobson, Ian Hillier, David Timmerman and Brian Montgomery-Wilson from the Mechanical Systems Engineering program competed in the Senior Design category at the Ontario Engineering Competition. They were one of the sixteen student teams to compete from the top engineering universities of Ontario. The competition is run by ESSCO (Engineering Student Societies’ Council of Ontario), a society for accredited university engineering programs of Ontario. After MSE’s official accreditation in the fall of 2010, MSE was inducted into ESSCO by unanimous vote in January. This competition was the first ESSCO event Conestoga has participated in.
The theme of the challenge was given out prior to the competition: “Implementing alternative solutions for resource management after failure of the initial design.” On Friday at 7:30PM the teams received the project scope, and had between 8:00PM Friday and 4:00AM Saturday to design, build, and write a presentation on their unique solution. The MSE students forwent sleep for the following day, instead choosing to rehearse for their presentation. On Saturday morning, the team presented their design, and in the afternoon demonstrated it. Conestoga was the only team to successfully perform the two challenges laid out in the competition.
The students will go on to compete with the 2nd place winners from the University of Windsor at the Canadian Engineering Competition held in Montreal this year from March 10-13.
This represents a huge achievement for Conestoga and in particular the MSE program. It is the first time in Ontario that a college degree program has been accepted into ESSCO and won 1st place at the Ontario Engineering Competition; a title previously held only by the most prestigious universities of Ontario.
