Weekly Joke

Engineer as a Designer of the Human Body

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.

One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.”

Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous systems many thousands of electrical connections.”

The last said, “Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?”

Weekly Joke – Engineering Rules

1. Any circuit design must contain at least one part which is obsolete, two parts which are unobtainable and three parts which are still under development.

2. Nothing ever gets built on schedule or within budget.

3. A failure will not appear till a unit has passed final inspection.

4. If you can’t fix it — document it.

5. The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the fabricator and impossible for the serviceman.

2012 Elections

Are you looking for excitement? A fancy title? Respect? Experience? Office keys? Your own business card? POWER?!?

Winter term is coming to an end, and elections will be soon upon us! Who of you will rise to the challenge after the current exec is long dead and gone!

Unfortunately, we do not run an autocratic society, and as such, if you are interested in running for a position you must be nominated by two people in a due democratic process. The nomination form is located here: http://conestogaengsoc.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/ces_nomination_form2012.pdf (Found under Documents)

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:

President is the leader of the pack and is the official voice of the society. This person will sit as a student liaison on many committees as well as be the official spokesperson for The Nut.

The VP External is in charge of liaising with the external organizations such as CFES, ESSCO and charity organizations external to EngSoc.

The VP Internal is in charge of all internal EngSoc events run by Engsoc during the term, they keep directors on track and work hard to make sure the many EngSoc events are as awesome as they can be.

The VP Operations ensures all financial matters are in line and they also run the novelties store.

Nomination forms are due to me, APRIL 2, 2012! If I do not have these in my hand by 5PM, you are out of luck. You can find me in the 3/4 year project room between 3-5PM. You can also hand in your forms EARLY, I’m always around somewhere.

Following nominations, you will have 2 weeks to campaign, and voting will occur just before exams.

Good luck! If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the current executive.

COVERALLS COVERALLS COVERALLS – A message from our VPI Connor Olsen
Do you use the machine shop? Do you feel that you’re always running out of pockets? Do you attend events in which you’d like to show how much better Conestoga is then any other engineering school? If yes to any of these, then you should purchase some coveralls, they’re great for parties, expanding your inventory and conferences. Normal eng. students pay ~$90 for their coveralls (i.e. UW) but we offer you coveralls for the fine price of $45.00. So, if you want em, fill out the form. I’m not going to remember any of your info in the halls so you have to fill out this form!
Leather Jackets!
Want to rock the limited-edition Conestoga Engineering leather? These jackets are ONLY available to MSE students! Get them while they’re hot!
We will be having the custom tailor come in on March 7th, 10AM-1PM in the CES office for sizing! They cost approximately $350 + modifications. (it’s on the CES calendar!)

Weekly Joke:

There are four engineers traveling in a car; a mechanical engineer, a chemical, an electrical engineer and a computer engineer. The car breaks down.”Sounds to me as if the pistons have seized. We’ll have to strip down the engine before we can get the car working again”, says the mechanical engineer. “Well”, says the chemical engineer, “it sounded to me as if the fuel might be contaminated. I think we should clear out the fuel system. “I thought it might be an grounding problem”, says the electrical engineer, “or maybe a faulty plug lead.” They all turn to the computer engineer who has said nothing and say: “Well, what do you think?” “Ummm – how about if we all get out of the car and get back in again?”

Weekly Joke:

ENGINEERS & GUILLOTINES

Today they’re leading a priest, a drunkard and an engineer to the guillotine. They ask the priest if he wants to face up or down when he meets his fate. The priest says that he would like to face up so he will be looking toward heaven when he dies. They raise the blade of the guillotine, release it, it comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. The authorities take this as divine intervention and release the priest.

Next the drunkard comes to the guillotine. He also decides to die face up hoping that he will be as fortunate as the priest. They raise the blade of the guillotine, release it, it comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. So they release the drunkard as well.

The engineer is next. He too decides to die facing up. They slowly raise the blade of the guillotine, when suddenly the engineer says:  “Hey, I see what your problem is…”

Weekly Joke:

An architect, an artist and an engineer were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a mistress. The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship. The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found there. The engineer said, “I like both.” “Both?” Engineer: “Yeah. If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other woman, and you can go to the lab and get some work done.”

NEM Rube Goldberg – All of March

This year as a result of having the best machine last year, ESSCO has asked us to build the CN tower machine. It is expected that this machine be more visually appealing, interesting, and reliable (properly designed and not thrown together with garbage). The machine is to be ready for March 8th where it will be tested live (unlike any other machine). If you would like to help, please sign up through the following link http://conestogaengsoc.ca/2012/01/30/nem-rube-goldberg-machine/. More details will be given to those who sign up.

Bowling at Dickson Bowl – 61 Ainslie St. S Cambridge
Last year the Society purchased two Groupon’s for bowling – They expire February 10th so that means we need to go bowling!

First 10 people to signup get in free for 2 hours of bowling with free pizza! Anyone else will have to pay for their own entrance, but it’s relatively cheap anyways.

We will be going Tuesday February 7th at 7PM. Hope to see you all there!

Wonderland Math and Physics Day May 13!

Volunteers are needed for Wonderland Math and Physics Day on May 13!

Here’s a description:

Every year ESSCO teams up with Canada’s Wonderland in Vaughan to encourage all high school students from Southern Ontario to learn about Math and Physics through the marvels of engineering that are known as rollercoasters.

Students are given questions from a standard assignment binder put together by Wonderland, and they walk around the park, solving the assignment questions by riding the rides and making observations.  There is also a marble roller coaster design contest, where students, who have built their own miniature roller coasters, can compete for prizes.

ESSCO volunteers are needed each year to help the students with the assignment questions through both guidance and referral to the answer key.  They are also responsible for judging the roller coaster contest.

What they didn’t mention is you get a FREE day at wonderland out of this for volunteering! AND a pass to return any day in the regular 2011 season!

To volunteer fill out the form here BEFORE April 18th:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDZhSENOQmk5M1RjbEZTY0xicUJvYXc6MQ

There is also a T-Shirt design contest, submissions required before April 8th:

Math & Physics Day is May 13th, and we’re looking for some awesome shirts & name tags ideas so we can show the high school students how awesome Engineering and ESSCO are! This is a great way to get involved, even if you can’t volunteer at the actual event. Get out your pens & pencils and get creative!!

T-Shirt Rules:

  • Including ESSCO mascots (pineapple or flamingo) is encouraged
  • Include the words “Math and Physics Day”
  • Graphics related to Science, Math and/or Engineering
  • Back or shirt design optional, but if designed, must have ESSCO logo visible
  • Resolution of at least 300dpi

For the name tag, keep in mind that it will be 3.5” in height and 4.3” in length, and should have room for volunteer’s names, and the word “volunteer”.

Submit your design(s) to wonderland@essco.ca by April 8th. If you have any questions or comments feel free to contact me at the above e-mail address, or Ryan at vpservices@essco.ca.
