Leadership Summer School

The Leadership Summer School is a one-week high quality training event organized as a joint event between CFES and a hosting university. The program gathers about 25 motivated students and young professionals from different universities and non-governmental organizations all over the world in the hopes of cultivating leadership skills from these promising individuals. One of the objectives of the training week is to exchange knowledge and share best practices between participants and the organizations involved. Furthermore, after completing the Leadership Summer School, participants will attain and become familiar with various leadership skills, and be able to return back home and apply what they have learned.

Schools are encouraged to send promising students who will be involved in leadership roles at their respective university.

FYIC 2012

Hey everyone, this is my report on FYIC 2012.

FYIC is the First Year Integration Conference. This is organized and run by the Engineering School Societies’ Council of Ontario (ESSCO). This year we met at McMaster University.

This conference focuses on getting students involved in their Engineering Societies and ESSCO conferences. It is only open to first year students accompanied by their head delegate. It also had sessions on Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE). Both the PEO and OSPE are very important to Engineers as the PEO is the body who grants you a Professional Engineering licence and OSPE is the body which represents Engineers, advocating for them and letting the public and government know the interest of Engineers. If you have time, check out both their websites:
http://www.peo.on.ca/
 and
http://www.ospe.on.ca/
 .

Instead of summing up each presentation, have a look at them yourself! They are all available as google documents in the following list. I did this format so everyone didn’t have to download files. They’ll be at the bottom of this post.

Finally, If you are interested in attending the next big conference, ESSCO Annual General Meeting, we will be announcing detail about it when we get closer to the date. It’s going to be at Queen’s University in Kingston. So, keep checking back!

Congress 2012

HEY EVERYONE,
This is Ian making a post from Whitehorse, Yukon where I am attending the CFES annual general meeting known as Congress.  As the flagship event of the CFES, Congress serves as both the Annual General Meeting of the Federation, as well as a leadership development forum for engineering students from across Canada.

CFES Congress is a diverse conference that spans a full week at the beginning of January and consists of leadership development sessions, informational presentations, guest speakers from industry, a career fair and plenary sessions.

It is during plenary that the decisions that guide the Federation are made. These include the election of the new Executive, ratification of the Board of Directors, changes to policy, mandates for the upcoming year and the selection of hosts for future events.

For more information on the CFES visit their site at http://www.cfes.ca.

I will be posting replies to this post throughout the week to let you know all of the wonderful things I am learning and doing north of 60.

FYIC (First Year Integration Conference)

The First Year Integration Conference (FYIC) is a conference put on by the Engineering Student Societies Council of Ontario (ESSCO – kind of like the provincial EngSoc) with the goal of getting a group of up and coming first year students excited and involved within your engineering society and give you a glimpse of what is happening outside of the walls of your school.  You will get an introduction to ESSCO and the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES-National Engsoc of EngSocs) as well as presentations from the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO – Regulating Body) and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE – a lobbying group for engineering in Ontario) as well as tons of other cool things.

Note: This conference is notorious for being a giant party. If you are a delegate, you are required to go to the sessions in order for the College to pay half of the fees. This means that you are more than welcome to party all night just as long as you are up in the morning for the sessions.

How much: $60 (it is actually $120 but the college is paying for half of up to 6 students)

Where: McMaster University located in gorgeous Hamilton, Ontario.

When: Friday, January 20th 2012 to Sunday, January 22nd 2012
