1st In Our Lunch Time Speaker Series

On Tuesday, January. 27 @ 12:00 PM, in Rm A2102/A2104, Sean Phillips, one of MSE alumni, is going to be visiting us to talk to students and faculty about his master thesis on modular robotic systems which he finished last term at the University of Waterloo. This is a great occasion to hear one of the many opportunity a Conestoga degree in MSE can provide.

We hope to see you all there!Image

Disparity between university educated engineers and us!

It has been suspected for sometime that there might exist a disparity between the wages of university educated engineers and college educated engineers, like ourselves. Now tangible statistics have become available to show the spread, and it’s big…. Like huge different!

The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) has just released a report on the yearly earnings of all engineers across the province. The information is current, as of June 1st 2012. There is a subsection of the survey that discusses the earnings of new engineering graduates, with less than two years of experience. 1,442 new engineering grads were included in the survey. According to the OSPE’s survey, the average new engineering graduate is earning an annual wage of $59,200. This does not include additional compensation which bumps the average total cash compensation to $61,400 per year. This is the average over the entire province. In our area of southwestern Ontario, the average is a little lower at a annual wage of $56,800 and average total cash compensation of $58,800 per year. Remember this may include engineering graduates from every university of college, and from every discipline.

Another report was published on June 12th by our own Karen Cain, the Mechanical Systems Engineering (MSE) Coordinator. This annual report, the MSE Coordinator Report, includes data on the previous graduates annual salary. The average for last years graduate’s yearly wage was $46,206.

As I stated before, there was always a disparity expected, but not this much! A separation of over $10,000? I have thought of three explanations to the massive disparity other than a difference in education:

  • Discipline: Mechanical engineers are quite populous, though as we know, MSE is much more encompassing than just a Mechanical program. Remember very well paid disciplines like Nano-Technologies (A relatively new program at University of Waterloo) and mining are included in the OSPE survey as well.
  • Co-op: Our co-op office markets our program too low. The last co-op term our co-op office recommends pay of $19-$21 per hour. With this wage at 40 hours per week, the annual wage would be $43,680. Simply enough the co-op office at Conestoga doesn’t know what we are worth to employers.
  • Finally KW job market may not be that strong. I know for a fact that many soon to be grads are currently looking for any job they can get.

There is a discussion forum both on LinkedIn and the Facebook group. Please voice your opinion!

May 15 Weekly Newsletter

Good afternoon everyone!

Hope everyone is enjoying their co-op terms and respective classes, here’s a quick update from your society!

ESSCO AGM is coming up next month, and at ESSCO AGM you can run for ESSCO exec positions! If you are interested in running for an ESSCO position, please contact Ian Hillier. Conestoga has pretty good rapport with the other schools so you would run a good chance at being elected!

Quick message to first and 2nd years; now that you are on your 1st and 2nd co-op terms respectively you should really think about making a LinkedIn account – it’s a great way to keep a track of your personal portfolio and business connections:

LinkedIn
Have you signed up for LinkedIn.com yet? LinkedIn is like Facebook for businesses. It acts as your “digital resume” online and can help you get jobs! It’s a great way to network and connect with other students, professionals and potential employers! We have a group on the site that you should sign up for once your registered: CES LinkedIn Group. Having these groups and associations on your profile show potential employers that you are involved with professional activities and are a step above the rest!

Feel free to add me or any of the executives to start getting connections!

Weekly Joke

Engineer as a Designer of the Human Body

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.

One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.”

Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous systems many thousands of electrical connections.”

The last said, “Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?”

Connor Olsen for VPE

Describe yourself

  • I am currently the VP Internal of CES
  • I have awesome denim
  • My favourite metal is brass
  • I am your only choice for VP External…
    • If we don’t elect a VP External, we can say goodbye to:
      • Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC)
      • Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC)
      • All provincial Inter School Events (ESSCO)
      • All national Inter School Events (CFES)
      • National Engineering Month Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM)
      • (So you should probably vote for me)

Executive roles and course work are both very time consuming. How do you plan on managing your time?

  • I’ll just not sleep.

What goals and initiatives do you have for CES?

  • Start a Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) team for the competition being held in London in 2014 so five of us can go barrelling down a hill in nothing but a roll cage and concrete running surfaces – this is the longest engineering design competition in Canada and we need to start going! (Yes, that is Rick Mercer at the front of the sled)

  • Look into hosting an Engineering Student Societies’ Council of Ontario conference, this will help expand our validity as a program with our peers and the local community
  • Get more involved with the community so that we can educate them on our awesome program and how we are all the best thing ever, hopefully gaining recognition as a program, sponsorships and even attract more co-op employers

  • Organize and take part in inter school events like pub crawls, plant tours, D.U.S.T.E.D. and all that stuff with other engineering schools
  • Bring students who haven’t been to an inter-school conference out to one if they’re interested
  • Have our own Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) qualifier, which has rules and stuff
  • Even though it has nothing to do with me, I want to smash a car to bits with Eng. Soc. Next year

This is a volunteer position with a lot of responsibilities and it is important that you are motivated. Explain why you are interested in this position?

  • I am currently the VP Internal of CES
  • I have awesome denim
  • My favourite metal is brass
  • I am your only choice for VP External…
    • If we don’t elect a VP External, we can say goodbye to:
      • Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC)
      • Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC)
      • All provincial Inter School Events (ESSCO)
      • All national Inter School Events (CFES)
      • National Engineering Month Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM)
      • (So you should probably vote for me)

Have you read the constitution?

  • Yes, I helped do the big rewrite last summer and I’m sure we will be attending to it again this summer

Have you been attending meetings?

  • Yes, my current exec position forces me to

How do you think you can help CES achieve its mission statement?

  • I have been learning about the VP External role for a long time now, and I am quite confident that I can step up to fill the position as required by the constitution as well as expand our social and professional horizons through exciting stuff already mentioned

Weekly Joke – Engineering Rules

1. Any circuit design must contain at least one part which is obsolete, two parts which are unobtainable and three parts which are still under development.

2. Nothing ever gets built on schedule or within budget.

3. A failure will not appear till a unit has passed final inspection.

4. If you can’t fix it — document it.

5. The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the fabricator and impossible for the serviceman.

Society Stuff:

We are still looking for a couch for the CES office – if anyone has a truck, and sees a decent one at the side of the road… Bring it in!

End of term is coming up, we are looking for EOT Party directors – I’m looking at you Connor and you Cowboy Dave! Since we have a bit of a budget surplus, CES will be providing the food for these party(s)!

2012 Elections

Are you looking for excitement? A fancy title? Respect? Experience? Office keys? Your own business card? POWER?!?

Winter term is coming to an end, and elections will be soon upon us! Who of you will rise to the challenge after the current exec is long dead and gone!

Unfortunately, we do not run an autocratic society, and as such, if you are interested in running for a position you must be nominated by two people in a due democratic process. The nomination form is located here: http://conestogaengsoc.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/ces_nomination_form2012.pdf (Found under Documents)

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:

President is the leader of the pack and is the official voice of the society. This person will sit as a student liaison on many committees as well as be the official spokesperson for The Nut.

The VP External is in charge of liaising with the external organizations such as CFES, ESSCO and charity organizations external to EngSoc.

The VP Internal is in charge of all internal EngSoc events run by Engsoc during the term, they keep directors on track and work hard to make sure the many EngSoc events are as awesome as they can be.

The VP Operations ensures all financial matters are in line and they also run the novelties store.

Nomination forms are due to me, APRIL 2, 2012! If I do not have these in my hand by 5PM, you are out of luck. You can find me in the 3/4 year project room between 3-5PM. You can also hand in your forms EARLY, I’m always around somewhere.

Following nominations, you will have 2 weeks to campaign, and voting will occur just before exams.

Good luck! If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the current executive.
