The Leadership Summer School is a one-week high quality training event organized as a joint event between CFES and a hosting university. The program gathers about 25 motivated students and young professionals from different universities and non-governmental organizations all over the world in the hopes of cultivating leadership skills from these promising individuals. One of the objectives of the training week is to exchange knowledge and share best practices between participants and the organizations involved. Furthermore, after completing the Leadership Summer School, participants will attain and become familiar with various leadership skills, and be able to return back home and apply what they have learned.
Schools are encouraged to send promising students who will be involved in leadership roles at their respective university.

Good afternoon everyone!
Hope everyone is enjoying their co-op terms and respective classes, here’s a quick update from your society!
ESSCO AGM is coming up next month, and at ESSCO AGM you can run for ESSCO exec positions! If you are interested in running for an ESSCO position, please contact Ian Hillier. Conestoga has pretty good rapport with the other schools so you would run a good chance at being elected!
Quick message to first and 2nd years; now that you are on your 1st and 2nd co-op terms respectively you should really think about making a LinkedIn account – it’s a great way to keep a track of your personal portfolio and business connections:
LinkedIn
Have you signed up for LinkedIn.com yet? LinkedIn is like Facebook for businesses. It acts as your “digital resume” online and can help you get jobs! It’s a great way to network and connect with other students, professionals and potential employers! We have a group on the site that you should sign up for once your registered: CES LinkedIn Group. Having these groups and associations on your profile show potential employers that you are involved with professional activities and are a step above the rest!
Feel free to add me or any of the executives to start getting connections!
Society Stuff:
There will be a meeting this Thursday in A2230 at 5:00PM. If your interested in helping out with Frosh this year let us know! An official invite/form will go out soon.
Have a good week,
James Hobson

The proposed amendment is to add the following section to the constitution. This prevents potentially corrupt executive from dissolving the society and stealing the assets.
DISSOLUTION OF THE SOCIETY
The Society will be dissolved upon resolution of a referendum where no less than two thirds (2/3) of the active members must agree. All liabilities will be honoured and the remaining assets will be held in trust by the Chair of Engineering for the best interest of the engineering students.

Election campaigns are well underway. Please check out each of the candidates platforms on the website: http://conestogaengsoc.ca/category/elections/
Engineer as a Designer of the Human Body
Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.
One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.”
Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous systems many thousands of electrical connections.”
The last said, “Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?”
There will be a meeting this Thursday in A2230 at noon. All are welcome to attend!
Have a great week!
James Hobson

Express Yourself…
Derek, a cat enthusiast who survived a Cambridge, ON, garage fire in 2009 after running into the flames to pull his five kittens out of the burning structure, has been treated for severe burn injuries the last few months. He lived with his adoptive family for more than 5 months after the ordeal recovering from the burns.
He made local headlines following the incident that left him badly burned. He required ongoing care as a result of his injuries, and was also diagnosed with a heart murmur.
On the day of the blaze, firefighter David Giannelli spotted the young man after he was seen touching each of his 4-week-old kittens with his nose, to make sure that his litter was safe, and then falling unconscious. He took the cats to North Shore Animal League America for treatment and Derek to St. Mary’s.
After a three-month recovery period, the cats were ready for to go home. Derek was returned to them after 5 months in the Burns Victim Unit at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto.
The North Shore Animal League created a heroism award in Derek’s name and recently unveiled The Derek Room, an online site showcasing animals in the organization’s sponsor program. Story courtesy North Shore Animal League
He also likes beer, water skiing, and going to the gym.
Executive roles and course work are both very time consuming. How do you plan on managing your time?
The same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time!
What goals and initiatives do you have for CES?
Explain how you are qualified for the position?
I shot a bear and I made it into a rug.
I am not arrogant, condescending, or impatient, but I am headstrong, and defiant in the face of impossibility. This means I will listen to your ideas, and if I believe in them, never give up. Do you want someone to fight for your voice?
This is a volunteer position with a lot of responsibilities and it is important that you are motivated. Explain why you are interested in this position?
Connections, management experience and a reference.
Have you read the constitution?
Yes, have you?…
Have you been attending meetings?
Yes
How do you think you can help CES achieve its mission statement?
My caucus will bring forth a new era of leadership to unite the society behind a banner of pride, power and proficiency among our peers!

My name is Greg Burns and I am heading into 3rd year of MSE. I have a beard and I kind of look like a lumberjack. I am a Star Wars fan, but enjoy a good Star Trek or BSG episode here and there. My favourite colour is green and my favourite superhero is Green Lantern. During the past year in CES I was the director of Brewery Tours, hence my other name, Brew King, I was director of finding a conference mascot, which many of you have met, THE NUT, and put together weekly crosswords for your enjoyment. I am approachable, interested in various engineering disciplines and very excited to be sharing my talents with CES for you!
I have already been involved in CES, fitting it in my life with school work. I find the break from school work as an enjoyable and productive procrastination technique. Just like any project when the due date is fast approaching you crunch hard to get it done. This is what us engineering students are known for. I am sure I will have a few more sleepless nights due to this position next year, but I’ll love every minute (except the morning). As well, I am working for the college this summer and winter, so I will be close for the entire year.
Specifically for VPO I want to complete the job description by the book. I want to maintain finances, meeting minutes, swag and the website. Now I do want some help on this so, DIRECTOR’S ASSEMBLE! I want our finances to be more transparent. This would come in a monthly update to both our council and the students once a month in the weekly update, a full budget with the monthly spending report showing where your money goes. I would like to begin our annuity with a combination of secure GICs (Guaranteed Investment Certificates) and larger return mutual funds. I would like to make our SWAG more available with the office selling items at least once every week at lunch. Finally in the VPO position I would work to garner more support from the local community and alumni in the form of donations and sponsorships.
Outside of the VPO position I want to see the continuation of the brewery tours, the expansion of student engineering teams such as Concrete Toboggan and more local outreach such as the Waterloo Regional Food Bank’s CanStruction event.
I think the number one thing that qualifies me for this position is the drive I have for CES to succeed. I so badly want CES to succeed as a society and become a vibrant participant on the provincial level that I will do anything to see this through. Other qualifications I have towards this position is my past experience with CES. Even though I have only been involved for the past year, I have been a class rep, and taken on many directorships such as Brewery Tours and finding a conference mascot. Other experiences I have are estimating various projects such as a bar investment, regular party estimates, and managing my high school’s music departments bank accounts which totalled over $30,000. Overall I think I am very qualified for this position, but I also know there is still much to learn.
I am interested in becoming more involved in CES. I want to help CES continue to be successful and expand. I am interested in getting to know everyone better in the society especially the new frosh coming in September.
I read the constitution last year when it was first released. There is still much to add and perfect in our constitution and I look forward to participating in its review over the summer.
I have been attending meetings for the past year dedicatedly. I usually have a lot to say at meetings and have been regularly a part of the agenda for the past few months.
I hope to help the CES continue to bring in speakers to broaden our views. To increase the quality of our speakers we may need to sponsor speakers. As well, I would like to help bring a conference to Conestoga. This will allow our students access to networking opportunities with other engineering schools.
