May 15 Weekly Newsletter

Good afternoon everyone!

Hope everyone is enjoying their co-op terms and respective classes, here’s a quick update from your society!

ESSCO AGM is coming up next month, and at ESSCO AGM you can run for ESSCO exec positions! If you are interested in running for an ESSCO position, please contact Ian Hillier. Conestoga has pretty good rapport with the other schools so you would run a good chance at being elected!

Quick message to first and 2nd years; now that you are on your 1st and 2nd co-op terms respectively you should really think about making a LinkedIn account – it’s a great way to keep a track of your personal portfolio and business connections:

LinkedIn
Have you signed up for LinkedIn.com yet? LinkedIn is like Facebook for businesses. It acts as your “digital resume” online and can help you get jobs! It’s a great way to network and connect with other students, professionals and potential employers! We have a group on the site that you should sign up for once your registered: CES LinkedIn Group. Having these groups and associations on your profile show potential employers that you are involved with professional activities and are a step above the rest!

Feel free to add me or any of the executives to start getting connections!

Society Stuff:

There will be a meeting this Thursday in A2230 at 5:00PM. If your interested in helping out with Frosh this year let us know! An official invite/form will go out soon.

Have a good week,

James Hobson

Constitution Amendment

The proposed amendment is to add the following section to the constitution. This prevents potentially corrupt executive from dissolving the society and stealing the assets.

DISSOLUTION OF THE SOCIETY

The Society will be dissolved upon resolution of a referendum where no less than two thirds (2/3) of the active members must agree. All liabilities will be honoured and the remaining assets will be held in trust by the Chair of Engineering for the best interest of the engineering students.

April 9 Weekly Newsletter

Elections

Election campaigns are well underway. Please check out each of the candidates platforms on the website: http://conestogaengsoc.ca/category/elections/

The UOIT Engineering Student Society is offering this course for Engineering Students across Canada! It is offered for a lower price to students and is worth taking a second to check it out!
We will be hosting a debate at some point this week – possibly Thursday.

Weekly Joke

Engineer as a Designer of the Human Body

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.

One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.”

Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous systems many thousands of electrical connections.”

The last said, “Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?”

Society Stuff

There will be a meeting this Thursday in A2230 at noon. All are welcome to attend!

Have a great week!

Connor Olsen for VPE

Describe yourself

  • I am currently the VP Internal of CES
  • I have awesome denim
  • My favourite metal is brass
  • I am your only choice for VP External…
    • If we don’t elect a VP External, we can say goodbye to:
      • Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC)
      • Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC)
      • All provincial Inter School Events (ESSCO)
      • All national Inter School Events (CFES)
      • National Engineering Month Rube Goldberg Machine (RGM)
      • (So you should probably vote for me)

Executive roles and course work are both very time consuming. How do you plan on managing your time?

  • I’ll just not sleep.

What goals and initiatives do you have for CES?

  • Start a Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) team for the competition being held in London in 2014 so five of us can go barrelling down a hill in nothing but a roll cage and concrete running surfaces – this is the longest engineering design competition in Canada and we need to start going! (Yes, that is Rick Mercer at the front of the sled)

  • Look into hosting an Engineering Student Societies’ Council of Ontario conference, this will help expand our validity as a program with our peers and the local community
  • Get more involved with the community so that we can educate them on our awesome program and how we are all the best thing ever, hopefully gaining recognition as a program, sponsorships and even attract more co-op employers

  • Organize and take part in inter school events like pub crawls, plant tours, D.U.S.T.E.D. and all that stuff with other engineering schools
  • Bring students who haven’t been to an inter-school conference out to one if they’re interested
  • Have our own Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) qualifier, which has rules and stuff
  • Even though it has nothing to do with me, I want to smash a car to bits with Eng. Soc. Next year

This is a volunteer position with a lot of responsibilities and it is important that you are motivated. Explain why you are interested in this position?

Have you read the constitution?

  • Yes, I helped do the big rewrite last summer and I’m sure we will be attending to it again this summer

Have you been attending meetings?

  • Yes, my current exec position forces me to

How do you think you can help CES achieve its mission statement?

  • I have been learning about the VP External role for a long time now, and I am quite confident that I can step up to fill the position as required by the constitution as well as expand our social and professional horizons through exciting stuff already mentioned

Alyssa Ryzebol for President

Describe yourself.
I am in third year, and will be in fourth year for my potential presidential term. I am organized and detailed, and if I say I will do something, I will carry through on it. I am a skiier (weather permitting…. bit of a tough winter right now….). My favourite food is lasagna (or steak). My favourite hockey team is the Toronto Maple Leafs (I know, I know….).

Executive roles and course work are both very time consuming. How do you plan on managing your time?

I will be in fourth year, so I have a huge advantage in terms of time available to commit to CES duties as years 2 and 3 are much more demanding.I currently attend all meetings, and plan on continuing to do so. The extra work I will be taking on will not be a problem, as I have the time available.

What goals and initiatives do you have for CES?

While I think what the society has done in two years is impressive, I hope to further develop the society to have a fuller presence in the MSE program. I hope to implement ideas requested by the student body and ensure all members of the society are informed of upcoming events and potential conferences.
Explain how you are qualified for the position?
I am currently a class rep, and have been involved with the society since it started. I have a good understanding of how the society works. I am organized, and enjoy challenges and problem solving. I think the society is a good place for me to apply these skills.
This is a volunteer position with a lot of responsibilities and it is important that you are motivated. Explain why you are interested in this position?
The society is an important part of the MSE program. It provides members opportunities to develop academically, socially, and professionally. I think this is important, and I want to help maintain the reputation this program has worked hard to develop. This reputation is critical, and I want to work to further improve our reputation. This will help current students and alumni when looking for jobs, which is the ultimate goal of our education.
Have you read the constitution?
Yes.
Have you been attending meetings?
Yes.
How do you think you can help CES achieve its mission statement?
Continue to offer funding for conferences, host more events, and increase awareness of the society and it’s offerings.

  • I talk good English (I swear!)
  • I have ideas, big and small that we can look into for events
  • I enjoy getting to know new people and I know how important events that CES host are to bring all years of the MSE program together. I would love to continue that tradition with the current and new MSE students next year.

This is a volunteer position with a lot of responsibilities and it is important that you are motivated. Explain why you are interested in this position?

  • I am only running for VPI (unlike my competition) because it’s the position that suits all my greatest strength. I have great management and leadership skills and very strong communication skills.
  • I am also an extremely friendly and down to earth person that can get along with a wide variety of personalities. VPI will allow me to meet with the students in all the years and get feedback that I can present during meetings on what direction we should have for events.
  • Also I have time and we need a more diverse CES committee.

Have you read the constitution?

  • …(Goes to read constitution)
  • Yes

Have you been attending meetings?

Derek Scholfield for President and VPI

Express Yourself…

Derek, a cat enthusiast who survived a Cambridge, ON, garage fire in 2009 after running into the flames to pull his five kittens out of the burning structure, has been treated for severe burn injuries the last few months. He lived with his adoptive family for more than 5 months after the ordeal recovering from the burns.

He made local headlines following the incident that left him badly burned. He required ongoing care as a result of his injuries, and was also diagnosed with a heart murmur.

On the day of the blaze, firefighter David Giannelli spotted the young man after he was seen touching each of his 4-week-old kittens with his nose, to make sure that his litter was safe, and then falling unconscious. He took the cats to North Shore Animal League America for treatment and Derek to St. Mary’s.

After a three-month recovery period, the cats were ready for to go home. Derek was returned to them after 5 months in the Burns Victim Unit at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto.

The North Shore Animal League created a heroism award in Derek’s name and recently unveiled The Derek Room, an online site showcasing animals in the organization’s sponsor program. Story courtesy North Shore Animal League

He also likes beer, water skiing, and going to the gym.

Executive roles and course work are both very time consuming. How do you plan on managing your time?

The same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time!

What goals and initiatives do you have for CES?

  • To hold our own awesome events, separate from other schools, to develop our own society and program/school spirit.
  • Scholarships awarded through CES on behalf of companies
  • Free food or drinks at events, because the society should do for you, not you for the society.
  • Fundraising from companies in the area(much like Nascar)
  • Accountability for executives
  • Pre-planning
  • Free T shirts each year(Free stuffs awesome)
  • Free popcorn once a month(Popcorns awesome)

Explain how you are qualified for the position?

I shot a bear and I made it into a rug.

I am not arrogant, condescending, or impatient, but I am headstrong, and defiant in the face of impossibility. This means I will listen to your ideas, and if I believe in them, never give up. Do you want someone to fight for your voice?

This is a volunteer position with a lot of responsibilities and it is important that you are motivated. Explain why you are interested in this position?

Connections, management experience and a reference.

Have you read the constitution?

Yes, have you?…

Have you been attending meetings?

Yes

How do you think you can help CES achieve its mission statement?

My caucus will bring forth a new era of leadership to unite the society behind a banner of pride, power and proficiency among our peers!

Gregory Burns for VPO

My name is Greg Burns and I am heading into 3rd year of MSE. I have a beard and I kind of look like a lumberjack. I am a Star Wars fan, but enjoy a good Star Trek or BSG episode here and there. My favourite colour is green and my favourite superhero is Green Lantern. During the past year in CES I was the director of Brewery Tours, hence my other name, Brew King, I was director of finding a conference mascot, which many of you have met, THE NUT, and put together weekly crosswords for your enjoyment. I am approachable, interested in various engineering disciplines and very excited to be sharing my talents with CES for you!

I have already been involved in CES, fitting it in my life with school work. I find the break from school work as an enjoyable and productive procrastination technique. Just like any project when the due date is fast approaching you crunch hard to get it done. This is what us engineering students are known for. I am sure I will have a few more sleepless nights due to this position next year, but I’ll love every minute (except the morning). As well, I am working for the college this summer and winter, so I will be close for the entire year.

Specifically for VPO I want to complete the job description by the book. I want to maintain finances, meeting minutes, swag and the website. Now I do want some help on this so, DIRECTOR’S ASSEMBLE! I want our finances to be more transparent. This would come in a monthly update to both our council and the students once a month in the weekly update, a full budget with the monthly spending report showing where your money goes. I would like to begin our annuity with a combination of secure GICs (Guaranteed Investment Certificates) and larger return mutual funds. I would like to make our SWAG more available with the office selling items at least once every week at lunch. Finally in the VPO position I would work to garner more support from the local community and alumni in the form of donations and sponsorships.

Outside of the VPO position I want to see the continuation of the brewery tours, the expansion of student engineering teams such as Concrete Toboggan and more local outreach such as the Waterloo Regional Food Bank’s CanStruction event.

I think the number one thing that qualifies me for this position is the drive I have for CES to succeed. I so badly want CES to succeed as a society and become a vibrant participant on the provincial level that I will do anything to see this through. Other qualifications I have towards this position is my past experience with CES. Even though I have only been involved for the past year, I have been a class rep, and taken on many directorships such as Brewery Tours and finding a conference mascot. Other experiences I have are estimating various projects such as a bar investment, regular party estimates, and managing my high school’s music departments bank accounts which totalled over $30,000. Overall I think I am very qualified for this position, but I also know there is still much to learn.

I am interested in becoming more involved in CES. I want to help CES continue to be successful and expand. I am interested in getting to know everyone better in the society especially the new frosh coming in September.

I read the constitution last year when it was first released. There is still much to add and perfect in our constitution and I look forward to participating in its review over the summer.

I have been attending meetings for the past year dedicatedly. I usually have a lot to say at meetings and have been regularly a part of the agenda for the past few months.

I hope to help the CES continue to bring in speakers to broaden our views. To increase the quality of our speakers we may need to sponsor speakers. As well, I would like to help bring a conference to Conestoga. This will allow our students access to networking opportunities with other engineering schools.
